Professional or student identity and commitment? Comparing the experiences of nursing students with literature on student success

Abstract Improving the rates of continuation and completion nursing students is a priority to ensure there are sufficient qualified staff deliver national healthcare services. In literature, which predominantly informed by research undertaken in traditional HE institutions with studying conventional academic programmes, development student identity course commitment identified as key components persistence success. This linear model assumes that formation takes place during transition into - professional identities develop graduates progress workplace. Qualitative UK Norway midwifery found strong desire become often starting point for enrolling HE, rather than culmination course. A future-facing sustain many through process accessing ‘enduring’ their degree programmes qualify them practice. But these do little nurture identity, could be harnessed help successfully complete studies. Recognising differences between professionally-oriented, students, those should inform approaches improve success nurses. Their learning experience needs affirming nurturing this emerging allow overcome challenges they strive nurses, fully embrace identity.?
